Expect nothing and you’ll never be disappointed. Or so they say…
Expectations of others preclude our spoken word. Expectations exist without awareness. But expectations exist to create space for the happiness of the unexpected.
I expected our first dance to be angelically sung and swept into the moment of embrace with the man I will be with until eternity. But after three minutes of swaying back and forth on the dance floor with no end of the song in sight, the contrived moment wasn’t what was planned. But the forced expectation led to the unexpected. Quietly slipping onto the dance floor with Matt while guests ate dinner and Zero 7 melodically wafted in the air, we danced. Alone. Away. An unexpected treat from an unmet expectation.
I expected our honeymoon to be perfect and glamorous and everything my dreams promised it would be. But after an exhausting flight, lost luggage, extortion transportation to the hotel, and a room with a view of a chain link fence, I fell into the arms of my husband and cried. It was nothing I expected. But neither was what happened after. Within minutes Matt was on the phone making arrangements at a new hotel, transferring our luggage, and hailing a taxi cab. An unexpected treat from an unmet expectation.
I expected the chaos my best friend and I would face on our immediate stretch of travel we both committed to prior to the wedding. But I wasn’t expecting to feel like a piece of me was traveling the world when my husband was. I was expecting to face stress, anxiety, and loads of laundry needing to be done. I wasn’t expecting to miss him while he was still in my presence. I wasn’t expecting to wear his cologne simply so I could smell him while he’s away. But this is an unexpected treat from an unmet expectation.
I was expecting the expected. But it was in the unexpected I found happiness and my reality. A reality better than my expectations.
