Christmas is coming and the perils of shopping have overtaken America. ABC, BBC, CNN report that America is in the greatest recession since the Depression, but the malls of America are still buzzing with crying children, mad moms in minivans, and people like me who have been dragged out by their spouse in public to “enjoy the holiday festivities.”
I used to LOVE Christmas. ChristmasTrees, ChristmasCookies, ChristmasCarols, ChristmasSmog, the whole nine. But now that I’m married and all grown up [bleh!], I’m losing the ChristmasSpirit, ChristmasJoy, and ChristmasReason. The phrase, We need to go to Target, sends me into convulsions and the thought of going to the mall gives me a twitch.
Matt: What’s wrong? You look like you don’t to be here.
Me: [bats eyelashes and fakes a smile] Really? What would make you think I wouldn’t want to spend my one evening off at Target walking down aimless aisles of stuff we’ll never buy for people we’ll never know? What on earth would make you think I don’t want to be here?
Christmas is about Jesus, his birth, and the wondrous joy he brought many years ago. Not Target, shopping malls, Christmas lights, and egg nog. So how come we don’t buy HIM any presents? How come HE doesn’t get a birthday cake? How come no one sings happy birthday to HIM?
Just to keep the ember of Christmas joy burning, I’m going to make a cake for SweetBabyJesus. And I’m going to sing him a birthday song. In fact, I may even wrangle up some gold, frankincense, and myrrh just for kicks. Because really, what infant doesn’t love myrrh? I kid, I kid.
I want to create the wonder that is Christmas by displaying the reason that is Christmas: Jesus. What ways can we overtly keep the reason for this holiday the motivation for celebrating?
**Edit to post: Guess who’s having a HAPPY BIRTHDAY JESUS party? The Olthoffs! My whole family is coming. Yes!**
I agree! I said something similar over on my blog last week! http://bit.ly/dSzoYS
I think knowing the reasons behind traditions is a good way to reflect Jesus. Advent calendars, Stars atop the tree, etc, all have their background stories. Having knowledge of these stories and being able to share when someone admires your decorations or a child says something about them is a good way to keep the reason there.
my dad is a pastor and every year he has a "birthday party for jesus" for the kids. complete with cake and hats. they sing and everyone brings a gift for the baby that they then donate to a women's shelter. love it!
i was actually thinking about baking a cake this year…and singing happy birthday to Jesus..i kid you not..i agree….My husband and I have been thinking about how to show our kids it's not all about gifts. Which even though my kids understand that it's about the birth of Jesus, might not be too thrilled about toning done the gift theme that Christmas has grown to have…but we think it's time…great post! And going to the mall isn't my thing either:)
Great post and mega dittos from Oregon!! Way to break it down girl!
WOOHOO! At least I'm not the only one π
Amen, sister! I try to avoid Target and Toys R Us at ALL costs! Jesus needs to be high and lifted up!
One of the traditions my mom passed down was signing all my gifts on Christmas morning from Jesus. We do the same with Isabella and Madelyn. I just wrote about it on my blog and posted some free Love, Jesus tags to download here:
http://madabella.typepad.com/blog/2010/12/gifted-…
We are praying as a family about how to give HIM something of ourselves, because you're right. It IS His birth we are celebrating!
It might sound silly to do that, but my girls are so aware that all we have is from Him.
That is awesome! I feel the same way about Christmas. Kootles to you for making a cake for Jesus! We started doing that with the kids last year and it is great! Yes, birthday cake, candles, singing to sweet Jesus….trying to raise these little ones to know the true reason for Christmas. We even are taking Christmas Eve and going to the service for the first time since the kids were little. We have put our foot down with "family" that just don't understand and our getting our eyes back on His birth! Merry Christmas to you and your beautiful family π
opps, I meant since the kids were born π they are little π
No need to clarify π I knew exactly what you meant! And agree.
Bianca,
I feel so convicted. As I look around my house I see a tree and stockings but nothing that represents the true mieaning of Christmas. I feel horrible…
Any suggestions on how I can display the true meaning of Chrismas around my house? I need to make sure I raise my babies to know the real truth about Christmas.. Thanks for your post…
The best first step is just talking about it. Making sure Jesus and His birth is the understanding of Christmas is the foundation of recognizing the reason for this season π
After that, buy children's books and stories that reflect the meaning of this holiday.
Our church participates in advent conspiracy. Which always gets me happy!
Just googled this and it sounds EPIC.
A couple ideas:
1) give gifts that mean something. it doesn't have to be this, but an idea: http://liferearranged.com/2010/12/give-it-away-gi…
2) do a jesse advent tree (even just for you and Matt!). It has seriously helped us re focus. http://liferearranged.com/2010/12/jesse-advent-tr…
{sorry if this seems like shameless self promotion…i don't mean it to!!!}
No self-promotion at all. It made it easy for me to link to it. I love it, J. So cool!
I couldn't agree more with your frustration. I feel the same way. I'm over the plastic light up Santa's. This year I've decide to make a birthday cake for Jesus: Cherry cake with cookies and cream filing and strawberry icing. I think if we incorporate little things that we normally do for birthdays into Christmas it will bring back the true meaning of it along with adding much more joy. I'm a birthday fanatic, so I prefer to celebrate Christmas more as a birthday — the greatest birthday ever!
Ohmyword! What kind of cake is that? It sounds divine.
I have not bought one single christmas gift nor gone christmas shopping. I'm with you on this one. I'm really not feeling the whole shopping extravanza nor the baking or cooking. Booohoo.. Call me Mrs. Grinch this year. π
I called MYSELF the Grinch. WHO ARE WE? It's ok. Let's focus on Jesus and it'll be all gravy, baby π
We do that!!! Bake a cake with my girls then on Christmas we will sing Happy Birthday to Jesus! It's the best, and I feel like it really brings it home. I have not purchased any gifts either. I love giving, love seeing children's faces light up when they open the gifts…love it all.
But frankly, it is so impractical to set one day out of the year and buy a present for so many people…at once! The fact of the matter is that I did not budget a Christmas fund throughout the year, and I don't want to overspend this month because the media says I have to. It's awkward though when my kid gets a gift and I don't give one in return π Tried to think of family gifts, but failed. I'm stumped and the days are winding down, which brings me to one conclusion. NO GIFTS! Just cake for Jesus!
I'm going to steel your birthday cake idea. π
For years my dad has been telling us that Christmas originated as a pagan holiday and that we as Christians should celebrate the birth of Christ every day. I call him the spiritual Grinch but I am finally understanding part of his view point. I keep christmas tree up until Feb.
Woohoo someone in this world understands me!!!!!!
Your post inspired me to write something similar on my blog just now. I agree, i think the commercialization of the season gets under my skin. it is about Jesus not target. But, I do think that this is the time of year where everyone takes time to show their gratitude to those in their lives, and i think I would like to participate, only because I don't think I show my gratitude enough. I know I don't. It's too late for me to go all out this year, but next year I plan on working more on showing my gratitude to others.
"The spirit of Christmas needs to be superseded by the Spirit of Christ. The spirit of Christmas is annual; the Spirit of Christ is eternal. The spirit of Christmas is sentimental; the Spirit of Christ is supernatural. The spirit of Christmas is a human product; the Spirit of Christ is a divine person. That makes all the difference in the world." -Stuart Briscoe
i think this sums it up pretty well. It truely is ALL about CHRIST!
Enough. Said. So deep, Jessica!
I can't believe you linked to Target… For the international readers?
Hahahaha! Of course! Just because Target is like our local shopping addiction, that doesn't mean my internation friends know what we're talking about π Gotta share the love!
That's so funny that you wrote about this today! I was just telling my family at dinner earlier how my friends family has baked a cake for Jesus every year since he was little and Christmas morning they all sing Happy Birthday to Jesus and blow out the candles. He's 24 now and they still do it. How beautiful is that?! π
All I can say is…I'm feeling the same!
me and my son have a yearly tradition of writing down what our gift for Jesus is for his birthday and we apply it for the next year.
last year my gift for Jesus was to have more self control and be patient towards my son.
my son's gift was to obey me more.
through out the year, we remind each other about our gift for Jesus, especially when we start slippin'. =]
We don't do Santa with our boys for that reason. We do Advent devotions every night and my 3 year old son has been singing Happy Birthday to Jesus EVERY time we blow them out! Love it… (Oh and he thinks Santa is Noah and I haven't bothered to correct him).
You inspire me, Bianca!
Just last Christmas I didn't realize why we were celebrating. In February of this year, that all changed. I went on a life changing trip to Israel and found my relationship with Jesus.
Your blog has inspired me to share my experience. I hope to show others that it's okay to question, research and seek out experiences to build your faith. I come from a very non-religious family, so this was a leap of faith, but one which I'm proud to take. Maybe my family will come to know Jesus as I do.
Now THAT would be a Christmas gift I would love.

Why Celebrate Christmas?
well, plainly one can see, HIS mercies are new every morning and quite frankly, me being the most jacked up person I know, With the Grace and mercy He has given unto me, that good enough for me! So, I do sing Happy Birthday Jesus. We do honor Him not only on Dec 25..but the other 364 days of the year! And all we do..we do for HIM!
A friend just sent an email to me yesterday with this link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OExXItDyWEY&fe… .
There are more details to the story behind the song, but while at the mall a couple of years ago, the woman's then four year old nephew, Spencer, saw kids lined up to see Santa Claus. Having been taught as a toddler that Christmas is the holiday that Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus, he asked his mom, "Where's the line to see Jesus?" Her sister mentioned this to her dad, who immediately became inspired and jotted words down to a song in just a few minutes.
my son josiah that is 4 years old said, ''well if its Jesus' birthday then that means were having cake and a pinata, right mom''? and i just thought, "thats right! and why didn't I think of that"! I guess it took my son to bring my feet to solid ground instead of going koo koo at the mall;)
My family no longer gives each other gifts at Christmas. It didn't start for any real spiritual reason, but I've found that as a result, the season is much more clearly defined for me. It really is about Christ, his birth and gift of new life. Presents were never really a big deal for my family, but taking away even that little distraction gave me a whole new perspective. There's no more wondering what you'll get, fighting holiday crowds in stores, or putting together wish lists. It's not something that everyone needs to do, but the past few years of giftlessness have been such a blessing!
