Titles are weird. I’ve written about my feeling towards door posts and name placards before, and titles fit in that same category. How do you synthesize everything you are into a twitterized blurb about what you do?

A couple weeks ago I was interviewed by Today’s Christian Woman for an article they wanted to write and since then, my little brother has referred to me as Today’s Christian Woman. But let’s not get things twisted: He’s thoroughly making fun of me. My mother squealed in delight and positioned the magazine on the living room coffee table so my siblings would see it when they arrived home [bless her heart]. But since then they jovially refer to me as the Grand Poobah of Female Christendom.

Listen peeps, of all the titles in the world, I’m not sure Today’s Christian Woman would be one of them. However, if we have the power to define words and titles, let’s excavate what defines a Christian woman of today.

I would define Today’s Christian Woman as someone who…

  • both a student of God’s word and a teacher of God’s word [whether in word or deed]
  • holds on to Truth while having latitude to explore the margins of faith
  • can read US Weekly and US World Report [and find a balance somewhere in between]
  • works effortfully in an office or in the home [or both]
  • married, single, divorced, or widowed
  • wears heels to church and running shoes on the mission field
  • worships in a sanctuary or in a traffic jam
  • can celebrate the successes of others while mourning the pain of loss for others
  • wants to live in culture and influence society through the barometer of Christ’s love
  • can speak the truth even when it hurts, love when it’s not reciprocated, and live out loud even if the world refuses to hear

If that is how we can define a Christian woman for today, then I’m game.

How would YOU define a Christian woman? For the good and the bad, I’m open to the discussion.
