Money is funny, my father would say when discussion the issue of tithing. People will talk about sin and lust before they will talk about their money, he said laughing. I’ve seen him wrestle with speaking about giving and tithing from the pulpit because of the stigma that many charlatans and television preachers have monopolized. But as Christians, we need to understand fully the tithing requirement in the Old Testament and the ratification in the New Testament (1 Corinthians 16:1-2).

  • Be a cheerful giver (2 Cor. 9:7)
  • Give from a willing heart (Exodus 25:2, 35-35:2, Ezra 2:68)
  • Motivated by love and generosity (Luke 21:1-4; 1 Corinthians 13:3)
  • Give without telling everyone and their momma (Matthew 6:3-4)
  • Give freely (Matthew 10:8)
  • Give honestly (Matthew 6:2-4)

When we fail to honor God with grace giving we rob from God (Malachi 3) and we forfeit the blessing promised in Malachi 3:10. If you are attending a church and you’re not tithing, you are taking from the resources and the finances of others. In addition to this, when we tithe our faith is tested and our motives are weighed in the light of our finances.

To claim to have experience thte grace of God in forgiveness and yet to be ungracious is a contradiction of the New Testament truth: Freely you have received, freely give (Matthew 10:8).

Grace giving or tithing is not a formula to gain material goods or wealth. We should not be manipulated or coerced by emotional appeals, customs, or rituals. If you have a pastor who is begging for money, his god is not GOD. Where God guides, He provides.
